The cost math nobody shows you

Fresh foods are ~72–77% water, so per-box prices mislead. Per 1,000 kcal — the honest metric — both brands land in the ~$8–13 range for all-fresh plans, a 3–8× premium over premium kibble (~$1.50–4). The real price separation comes from Ollie's baked and half-fresh plans, which cut the daily cost dramatically while keeping some fresh food in the bowl. If budget is the constraint, a mixed plan beats abandoning fresh entirely. Run your own numbers in our cost tool.

Transparency: a real difference

Ollie publishes calorie density per recipe (1,298–1,540 kcal/kg) plus nutrition PDFs, and names its nutrition team, led by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist (DACVIM-Nutrition). The Farmer's Dog says four board-certified nutritionists formulate its food but publishes neither their names nor per-recipe guaranteed analysis on public pages — you see full label data only after subscribing. That doesn't make the food worse; it makes the claim harder to verify before you pay, and it's why The Farmer's Dog carries a low transparency score in our brand profile.

Daily-life differences

The Farmer's Dog ships per-dog pre-portioned packs — open, pour, done, with zero measuring; the trade-off is non-resealable sleeves that are messy for partial portions. Ollie ships multi-meal tubs with a scoop and storage container — resealable and tidier, but portion accuracy is on you. Multi-dog households and precise feeders tend to prefer The Farmer's Dog's model; people who want flexibility (and Petco pickup) tend to prefer Ollie's.

Corporate facts current comparisons miss

Ollie was acquired by Agrolimen — the Spanish group behind Affinity Petcare — in February 2026 (reported at $600M+), and continues as an independent brand; no recipe or pricing changes have been announced since. The Farmer's Dog remains independent at roughly $1.2B annualized revenue. Neither brand has ever had a recall (verified against FDA records, July 2026).

Questions

Is The Farmer's Dog cheaper than Ollie?

For like-for-like all-fresh plans, usually yes by a modest margin in 2026 pricing tests. But Ollie's baked and mixed (half-fresh) plans undercut both brands' fresh plans substantially — if total cost matters most, that's the lever.

Which is better for picky eaters?

Both score well on acceptance in third-party testing; fresh food generally beats kibble here. Ollie's baked line adds a crunchy option if your dog dislikes soft textures.

Has The Farmer's Dog or Ollie ever been recalled?

No — neither brand has any recall on record as of July 2026, verified against FDA enforcement records and independent recall databases.

Did Ollie change after the Agrolimen acquisition?

As of July 2026, no recipe, sourcing, or pricing changes have been announced since the February 2026 acquisition. We track reformulations in our database and will flag any label changes.

Nutrition figures come from the sourced label database; recall statements are checked against FDA records in the recall tracker. Brands reformulate and reprice without announcing it, which is why the checked-date is printed at the top — if this page and the label in front of you disagree, the label wins and we want to know: send a correction.
